2013 Somerville PorchFest This Saturday

If you’re unfamiliar with Somerville PorchFest, it’s a series of little concerts around the city of Somerville, where a traditional stage is replaced with a porch. It takes place this Saturday from 12-6pm. A full list of bands with a map of performances broken down by genre can be seen here.

In 2011, we created a decentralized music festival—PorchFest. Perhaps you’ve sat on your porch and overheard a neighbor strumming guitar on another porch? Porchfest takes this idea and multiplies it. This is not a festival per se but rather a community event where Somervillians share their love of playing and listening to music. Think of Somerville Open Studios, which is for visual artists, but for music.

On Saturday, May 18th musicians and bands throughout Somerville will celebrate and utilize an underused public venue: The Porch. Acts—ranging from bollywood funk, cosmic americana, killer blues, Moroccan, Balkan, gospel, American space rock and clawhammer banjo—will serenade passersby from porches throughout Somerville.

There are three time slots are based on three quadrants of the city; east to Central will be 12-2; Central to Willow will be 2-4; west of Willow 4-6. It’s all on this map.

Be sure to view the band profiles complete with urls and mp3s found on the map listing.

Given the scale of the event, we recommend that before you print the map, you could pull up the content by zone. I.e. print out the 12-2; then 2-4. You’ll probably have an easier time reviewing the information.

Vampire Weekend Play Agganis Arena Tonight

Vampire Weekend released their latest album, Modern Vampires of the City, yesterday and are currently touring to support the release. They play the Agganis Arena in Boston tonight, and tickets are still available here.

The Staves are English sisters Emily, Jessica and Camilla Staveley-Taylor. They recently released their debut album, Dead & Born & Grown, on March 19th, and spent the majority of 2012 on tour with Bon Iver, The Civil Wars, and performing at festivals.

They kick off a 25-date debut North American headline tour next week and play the very intimate Cafe 939 in Boston May 20th. Tickets can be purchased here.

Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros today announced the release of their forthcoming third studio album. The self-titled offering will be released in the U.S. and Canada on July 23rd via Community Music and everywhere else on July 29th.

“These songs mean everything to me,” said frontman Alex Ebert who produced the album. “It’s the rawest, most liberated, most rambunctious stuff we’ve done.”

Twenty One Pilots To Play Middle East Downstairs

Back in January, I wrote about the upcoming band Twenty One Pilots. The duo from Southern Ohio released a fantastic well-produced album, play passionate high-energy live shows, and are slowly growing in popularity. The only piece missing is high exposure, and the rest will fall into place. If they can easily sell out a 2,200 capacity venue in Columbus Ohio, they will eventually be able to do it anywhere.

Introducing The Olms

The Olms are Pete Yorn and J.D King. Their self-titled debut album has a June 11th release date and features “Wanna Feel It”, “Someone Else’s Girl”, and “On the Line”.

It looks like the touring band members include Pete Yorn, Malcom Cross, Johnny Polonsky, J.D. King, and Giuseppe Patanè. The band has announced a handful of tour dates, with a stop at the Brighton Music Hall June 11th. Tickets on sale Friday at noon.

Free Family Friendly Celebration of the Earth Takes Place on May 18, 2013 at DCR Hatch Memorial Shell in Boston

The annual Radio 92.9 EarthFest will return to DCR’s Hatch Memorial Shell in Boston on May 18, 2013 with a stellar line-up that includes Vertical Horizon, Cracker, Gentlemen Hall, Fastball and Camper Van Beethoven.

The 20th anniversary of Radio 92.9 EarthFest will be one of the best celebrations of the Earth across the country. Presented by Whole Foods Market, the family-friendly festival is the largest free radio station concert in the country, showcasing national and local music acts, environmentally friendly products and local non-profit environmental organizations. The event is held at the picturesque DCR Hatch Memorial Shell, along the Charles River in Boston.

Environmental responsibility starts at a young age. With this in mind, the Radio 92.9 EarthFest has created Kids’ Planet, an interactive area designed specifically for families. Kids’ Planet will feature a musical line-up specifically aimed at children under age 12 as well as environmental activities and educational displays. The Kids’ Planet line-up will be announced shortly.

A local band, chosen through a Battle of the Bands competition, will open the concert on the Hatch Shell stage at 11:15 a.m. Performances on the Kid’s Planet stage begin at 10:00 a.m.

“For 20 years, Radio 92.9 has worked with the Department of Conservation and Recreation to create a celebration of the Earth featuring a diversity of performers and activities for all ages,” said Ken West, program director at Radio 92.9. “Working with partners such as Whole Foods, Radio 92.9’s EarthFest has become Greater Boston’s kick-off event for the summer. We are looking forward to another fantastic event.”

For more than 20 years, Radio 92.9 EarthFest has offered festival goers an opportunity to learn how they can make an environmental difference. This year, the festival will feature exhibits and environmental displays, staffed by sponsors and non-profit environmental organizations from New England. Each exhibitor is focused on raising awareness and offering educational information about different environmental issues facing the planet. Some of the highlights will include:

• The Whole Foods Pavilion - Nearly two dozen companies will sample earth-friendly products along with demonstrations and other interactive activities.

• Free Bike Valet offered by MassBike- Mass Bike will once again be onsite staffing a free bike-valet program, offering concertgoers an alternative to driving to the festival. MassBike continues to promote a bicycle-friendly environment and encourages bicycling for fun, fitness and transportation.

• Eco-Pavilion – Dozens of local environmental groups and agencies will be on-site to educate attendees on how to be green.

• Casella Zero-Sort Recycling Program -To minimize the environmental impact of the event, Casella Waste Systems will manage a comprehensive recycling program onsite.

In addition to the environmental activities taking place at the festival, Radio 92.9 will be collecting donations for The One Fund Boston, an organization set up by Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick and Boston Mayor Tom Menino to benefit the victims of the Boston Marathon bombing.

The Radio 92.9 EarthFest is produced in conjunction with the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR.) The Department of Conservation and Recreation is steward of one of the largest state parks systems in the country. Its 450,000 acres is made up of forests, parks, greenways, historic sites and landscapes, seashores, lakes, ponds, reservoirs and watersheds. The DCR’s Hatch Memorial Shell and surrounding Esplanade area is a renowned venue for free events and programs in the city of Boston.

Because the Radio 92.9 EarthFest is expected to draw a crowd of more than 100,000 people, attendees are encouraged to take advantage of the free bike valet service offered by MassBike or use public transportation. The DCR Hatch Shell is accessible by MBTA. Concertgoers can take the Green Line to Arlington Street or take the Red Line to Charles Street / MGH. 2013 Newport Folk Festival Aftershows: Dawes, Deer Tick, and More

The Newport Folk Festival is continuing the tradition of aftershows, and have announced that Dawes “and friends” will play the intimate Jane Pickens Theatre (capacity 500) in Newport on Friday and Saturday night (July 26th & 27th). You must be 21+ and all tickets are will call only.

Proceeds from the evening will go to benefit the Newport Festivals Foundation whose mission it is to maintain the famed Newport Jazz Festival® and the Newport Folk Festival® in perpetuity and offer programs to educate young people about music

Last year, it was Conor Oberst and friends that played the Jane Pickens Theatre. Jackson Browne ended up being one of “the friends” and played a few songs (“Take It Easy” / “Our Lady of the Well”) with the boys. You can watch a few videos from that show here.

The tradition continues at the Newport Blues Cafe on Folk Festival Weekend when Deer Tick and Friends take the stage for their third consecutive year. Tickets for all evening events, Friday July 26th, Saturday July 27th, and Sunday July 28th, will be announced in the next few weeks. All event details and ticket prices will be announced via social media and the Blues Cafe website prior to sale date. In an effort to discourage scalpers and to offer our patrons an opportunity to attend these shows tickets will only be available through the Newport Blues website.

Aziz Ansari is best known for his co-starring role opposite SNL’s Amy Poehler and Rashida Jones in the critically acclaimed NBC Comedy Series “Parks and Recreation.” Ansari plays Tom Haverford, the sarcastic and occasionally sleazy government employee who is trying to weasel his way to the top of the local Parks and Rec department in Pawnee, Indiana. In 2009, Ansari released his much anticipated stand-up special and album for Comedy Central: “Intimate Moments for a Sensual Evening.”

Ansari can be seen in Judd Apatow’s comedies “Funny People” and “Get Him to the Greek.” Ansari has also had roles in the hit comedies “I Love You, Man,” and “Observe and Report.” Ansari first came to audiences’ attention on MTV’s hit sketch comedy series “Human Giant.” Ansari also had a memorable guest-starring role on HBO’s “Flight of the Conchords,” in which he portrayed a racist fruit vendor. In addition, he was seen in a multi-episode arc on “Scrubs.”

100% of ticket proceeds plus a $9,500 donation from the Wilbur will be donated to The One Fund Boston & The Officer Richard Donohue Fund . The One Fund Boston was formed by Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick and Boston Mayor Menino, in order to raise money to help those families most affected by the tragic events that unfolded during Monday’s Boston Marathon. Officer Richard Donohue is showing some positive signs of recovery but it will be a long and difficult road for him and his family. The MBTA Police Association Benevolent Fund, Inc. is seeking donations to assist him and his family in this difficult time via the Fund set up for him and his family.
